Phase 2 Room, BRK Through Overland Park, KS- 2023
Everglades is a ‘minesweeper’ style game at BRK Through played via 36 interactive stepping stones. Players need to work there way through the U-shaped room using hints provided by strategically placed buttons. Some stepping stones are ‘safe’, others are not!
I created this room based on the concept from a much simpler game called ‘minefield’ in the Prison Island facilities. There version has only a single hardwired path, and limited interactivity/replayability. My version of the game presents a different ‘safe’ path to each player, and randomizes that path each time one of the Hint buttons is pressed.
The stepping stones were designed to balance durability, reliability, serviceable, and cost of manufacture. We ended up with a simple and rugged CNC manufacturable design based on microswitches, ws2011 addressable leds strips, and a custom PCB board. The stepping stones have the ability to be animated individually or as a group, but that was not implemented in the final version of the game.
Overall design and art direction of this room was done by myself, based on concept art provided by the client.
Architectural Design, Electrical Design, Mechanical Design and Initial Programing done by myself. Final Programming and network integration done by Prison Island staff based on my initial code.
Vinyl Artwork execution and installation by Carina White.
